Currently, there are a couple of deck board straighteners in the market. These tools claim to make a deck builder’s workload easier and range in styles from pry bars to complex gadgets with many moving parts. However, where these tools falter is in long-term performance and the ability to bend the hardest decking materials. One such tool that does address these concerns is the new Hardwood Wrench™ from DeckWise®.

The Hardwood Wrench™ is capable of a pushing force of roughly 1,100 pounds. That bending power is over eight times greater than any other deck board straightener available today. By employing a self-locking cam attached to a high-quality anodized aircraft grade aluminum dog with an ergonomic stainless steel and hardwood handle, the design of the Hardwood Wrench™ makes installing deck boards a true one-man operation.

Expandable and reversible, deck builders can use this advanced tool in tight spaces without worrying about impeding other boards. Additionally, it is compatible with both single and double joists, capable of bending multiple boards at once, and works with all types of decking material including pre-grooved lumber, composites and PVC.

That’s how impressive the Hardwood Wrench™ was before the new and improved one hit the market. Now we are looking at a tool that does all that, plus some. DeckWise® discovered that if they enlarged the length of the cam, it would completely improve the functionality of the tool. The larger surface area allows for an increased range and more bending power, helping you create closer gaps with even the most extreme bowed boards.

In addition to an increased surface area on the cam, the pins on the Hardwood Wrench™ were modified and adjusted, creating a stronger grasp on the joist. This alteration turns the Hardwood Wrench™ into a dual-purpose tool, able to not only straighten deck boards, but now, siding boards as well.

With the small changes that DeckWise® made, they can now offer you the ideal tool for precise deck board installation. One tool, ten configurations, toughest bending power available, and dual-purpose. Some may claim to have ‘better’ and ‘new and improved’ products, but can’t back it up. When DeckWise® makes this claim, they mean it. The Hardwood Wrench™ is truly the ultimate, indispensable deck board straightener professionals can use for all their decking, flooring, and cladding projects.

Have you ever received warped wood and were unsure what to do with it? Well, the new developments in straightening tools provides a solution to the issue. Previously, methods such as using a scissor jack, pry bar, and pipe clamp were used in attempts to straighten wood. Those methods are not only timely, but are hard work and often require more than two hands. At DeckWise®, we have created a tool, the Hardwood Wrench™, that will shorten your straightening time and lighten the work load. With the use of this tool, installation becomes a one-man operation.

The U.S. patented Hardwood Wrench™ is a self-locking board straightening tool that offers endless benefits. With its larger self-locking cam, stainless steel and ergonomic hardwood handle, and adjustable joist pins it straightens deck boards with ease. But wait, there’s more. The Hardwood Wrench™ is expandable, reversible, dual-purpose and has a pushing force of roughly 1,100 pounds.

Sounds pretty awesome, right?

Here’s how the Hardwood Wrench™ works: You start by placing the adjustable joist pins on the joist and butt the cam against the board. Turn the handle to straighten the deck board, which automatically locks the cam into place. That’s it!

Both of your hands are now free to install the fasteners. To remove the Hardwood Wrench™ you simply swing the handle to unlock. One other tool you may want to consider using, which compliments the Hardwood Wrench™, is DeckWise® Board Spacers. These brightly color-coded spacers come in five different sizes and are meant to work flawlessly with the Hardwood Wrench™. These spacers assure you that you have even gaping between your boards.

Quit Screwing Around.

Pre-drill your hardwood to avoid breaking screws, or worse, splitting deck boards. Though many companies claim you can install their hidden deck fasteners into hardwood without pre-drilling, you shouldn’t believe them. Here, at DeckWise®, we have tested them all ourselves. Our results found that no matter what type of screws, fasteners and wood you use, pre-drilling produces the best results.

Individuals who do not pre-drill their hardwood risk stripping and breaking the screws. There are many different types of screws, and depending on what they are made of determines their level of durability. High-quality screws, such as stainless steel, are good screws because they are less likely to corrode. However, they tend to be softer, which means they are more likely to bend if the user does not pre-drill. Just the same, screws of a lesser quality are more durable for drilling, but they tend to corrode quickly. This corrosion will cause the decking to become unstable. What’s the solution to such a problem? Pre-drilling. That plus the use of high-quality screws, such as DeckWise® Colormatch Screws, will result in a long-lasting, strong and stable hardwood structure.

You may know, hardwood is the densest natural material you can build with. When it’s installed properly the results can be exquisite. And at DeckWise®, we are all about fasteners for hardwoods. That is why our engineers have created products such as the DeckWise® Hidden Deck Fasteners, the Drill & Drive and the Colormatch Screws. These products help you to properly finish your project in a fraction of the time.

Below are some helpful steps to properly install the DeckWise® Hidden Deck Fasteners, the Drill & Drive and the Colormatch Screws.

  1. Use the Drill & Drive to pre-drill into the deck boards (you don’t need to drill into the framing).
  2. Flip the tip of the Drill & Drive.
  3. Place the clip into position.
  4. Drive in the screw at a 45 degree angle.

After completing those four simple steps you’re done!

I saw an online post the other day on a deck building blog that I found quite interesting. The poster asked if anyone could give him some ideas on how to speed up the deck building process. He received over sixty replies, with many of them supporting one answer: Skip a step. Although they discussed a number of steps they felt could be skipped, one stood out more than the rest; one that we, here at DeckWise®, feel is extremely important if you care about the look and life span of your deck.

I’m talking about pre-drilling. Recently, I blogged about the reasons one should pre-drill so I’m not going to repeat myself. What I would like to do instead, is discuss how you can pre-drill without adding more installation time. Typically, when pre-drilling is involved it includes a number of different tools that you must constantly change out such as drill bits, countersinks, and drive tips. With this in mind, pre-drilling can definitely become a time-consuming task. But it doesn’t have to be.

What if you could take three tools that all perform different functions and combine them into one? Imagine the time you would save and the hassle you would rid yourself of. No more worries about dropping parts or switching from one tool to the other. Imagine deck installation moving along three times faster, without skipping steps.

DeckWise® has just the right tool to do the trick. It’s called the Drill & Drive and it is a 3-in-1 drill bit, countersink bit, and driver tip that will help speed up pre-drilling your hardwoods, countersinking for plugs, and driving screws. Budget-friendly and durable, the Drill & Drive is a complete kit that will take care of all your needs, efficiently. Simply drill, flip, drive (video).

It’s wise not to skip steps, but even wiser to combine three steps into one. You’re time is valuable and DeckWise® understands that.
